Zander
Zander is a predatory fish that anglers on Viskaart most often catch with a spinning rod from the shore and from boats, using soft plastic lures. The database holds 2880 reports for this species, mostly from Ukraine. This article gathers what is known from reports and community discussions: seasonality, lures, technique, tackle, and winter fishing.
Species overview and behavior
Zander is a predatory fish that stays close to the bottom, in holes, drop-offs, and river channels. According to reports, it is often caught in the evening and at night, and also in overcast weather, for example before rain. Biological details (spawning, diet by age) are not covered in this article and need to be added by an editor.
When and how it bites: seasonality
By number of reports per month, the peak falls in October (460 reports), followed by November (291) and September (278). The fewest reports are in February (44), and December and January are also low, so zander is caught noticeably less in winter. This is a statistic of angler activity, not a direct measure of biting, so it is not wise to draw firm conclusions from it.
Users write that zander bites well in autumn, but trophy fish appear less often than in summer. One post raises the question of smaller fish in late autumn. The data offers no single answer, so this is more an observation from individual anglers.
Fishing methods
The vast majority of reports concern spinning (2280). Next come bottom fishing (109), float fishing (56), live bait fishing (53), and ice fishing (46). In other words, spinning with a jig is the basic choice for zander, and other methods are secondary.
Lures and baits
Reports most often mention soft plastic lures (55), including Keitech (18), UpStream (16), and Flagman (11). Live baits also appear (maggots, earthworms, or a combination), along with wobblers, spoons, and mandulas. Users describe success on the Keitech Crazy Flapper 3.6" and on crankbaits, and in one January report crankbaits drew bites while the fish ignored soft plastics.
- Soft plastic paddle tails and twisters on a jig head: the basic option.
- Mandulas, including micro 5.5 cm, on a cheburashka head or a jig rig.
- Crankbaits and wobblers: they work when soft plastics are ignored.
- Color: anglers advise trying natural, white, acid, and purple shades; there is no clear universal answer.
The community widely holds that no universal lure exists: fish preferences can change even between neighboring waters. For this reason, anglers advise quickly changing lure type, size, color, and retrieve until you find a working combination.
Retrieve technique
For zander, anglers recommend a retrieve close to the bottom: steady with pauses, with one or two lure twitches and a pause. One commenter describes a simple pattern: one or two sharp turns of the reel with a lift. If you are confident a zander is at the spot, cycle through lures and retrieves rather than changing location right away.
Tackle
For shore jigging, discussions mention a rod 2.4 m or longer (2.5-2.6 m is recommended for casting distance and lure control) with a test of roughly 5-28 g. The line is thin, around 0.6-0.8 PE, preferably 8-braid for long casts, with a fluorocarbon leader. Participants also stress that reel quality plays a big role in casting distance. These are opinions of participants, not standards.
Winter fishing
Zander is caught much less in winter: the database has only 46 reports involving ice fishing overall. According to advice from a discussion, anglers search large holes, fish with a balancer or a summer soft plastic, work the lure from the bottom up in steps to about 2 m above the bottom, make roughly 5 retrieves per hole, and move on quickly if there is no reaction. Without a depth map, finding holes is harder, and Viskaart has little detailed data on this so far.
Size, release, and regulations
Minimum sizes and catch limits vary by country and water body, so check them in regional articles. Many anglers release small zander: for example, one report describes releasing a 39 cm fish because it was below the legal size on the author's water.
