The name of the water
Black Sea
Description
Black Sea rockfishing gives you a unique chance to live two completely different fishing stories in a single day. If you want to feel the maximum contrast of emotions, a combo of hunting garfish and horse mackerel is exactly what you should try, and it's something I just have to tell you about in my blog.
During the day, the star of the show is the sleek garfish — a true silver arrow of our sea. It's maximally dynamic, visual, and fast fishing that demands long casts with heavy shiny pilkers or using a bombarda. When this predator with its characteristic long beak attacks the bait in the water column, and after the hookset starts doing acrobatic flips and dances on the surface, the adrenaline just goes off the charts. You see every detail of the fight under the blinding sea sun, and this visual contact makes the whole thing incredibly spectacular.
But as soon as the sun dips below the horizon and thick darkness wraps around the coast, it's time for a completely different kind of magic — the horse mackerel bite. Heavy tackle gets swapped for delicate ultralight, and instead of sight, pure tactile feel takes the lead. Fishing horse mackerel on light pelagic jigs with glow-in-the-dark silicone turns into a kind of night meditation. All that's left is silence, the rhythmic sound of the surf, and that sharp, hungry strike of the predator "in hand," transmitted like an electric pulse through the rod blank. It's an exciting game where you need to pick the right tungsten weight, get the retrieve depth right, and savor each time you weigh the silver beauty in the beam of your headlamp.
The combination of daytime explosive drive and nighttime focus makes sea fishing incredibly multifaceted. Probably the first time in a while when I didn't even want to take work photos because it would eat into precious fishing time. And of course, you can't ignore the taste of horse mackerel.
